Meet the management of KLM: our Executive Committee, Supervisory Board, and directors.

Executive Committee

KLM’s management is in the hands of its Executive Team. The statutory Managing Directors are President and Chief Executive Officer Marjan Rintel, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer Bas Brouns, Chief Operations Officer Maarten Stienen, and Chief People Officer Miriam Kartman.

Supervisory Board

The KLM Supervisory Board oversees the management conducted by the Board of Managing Directors as well as KLM’s general and operational performance and corporate governance. It also advises the Board of Managing Directors. The Supervisory Board monitors the KLM Group’s strategy development and policymaking processes and approves major management decisions. It further discusses how the company approaches the impact, risk and opportunities related to sustainability.

The Supervisory Board has nine members. Of these, four members are nominated by KLM and five by Air France-KLM. The Supervisory Board consists of Wiebe Draijer (chair), François Enaud, Frédéric Gagey, Jan-Kees de Jager, Christian Nibourel, Marjan Oudeman, Fleur Pellerin, Benjamin Smith and Janine Vos.

Biography Marjan Rintel 

Marjan E.F. Rintel (1967) – President and CEO – has a strong track record in civil aviation. After her studies, Rintel worked in various roles at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In 1999, she moved to KLM and held a number of different positions until 2014. She got to know the company from the inside: operationally and commercially. In 2014, Rintel exchanged KLM for NS (Dutch Railways). For six years, she held the position of Operational Director on the Executive Board. In 2020, she was appointed Chairman of the Board. On 1 July 2022, she returned to KLM as President and CEO.

Rintel is responsible for the overall strategy and performance of KLM, in which setting strategic priorities to strengthen KLM's market position is an important aspect. In addition, she is committed to helping KLM further recover from the COVID-19 crisis while making KLM even more sustainable. It is very important that this vision and the role of innovation in it are further developed.

She is also responsible for maintaining and strengthening a customer-focused and efficient organisation. The focus is on developing and improving collaborations, partnerships, and strengthening KLM's social position. Rintel believes that the bond between KLM and society should be strengthened with a focus on mutual understanding.

In her role as President of KLM, Rintel is a member of the Executive Committee of the Air France KLM Group and the CEO Committee. She also holds various other additional positions.

Rintel studied Business Administration at the University of Groningen.

Biography Bas Brouns

Chief Financial Officer Bas Brouns (1971) is a statutory managing director and responsible for KLM's financial planning, reporting, investments and risk management. As CFO, Bas manages the Corporate Control, Corporate Finance & Treasury, Internal Audit, Passenger Business Controlling, Taxation and Real Estate & Facility Contracting departments. He also bears ultimate responsibility for Procurement and Fuel.

Bas Brouns has worked at KLM for more than 28 years and has held financial positions in various areas, including network planning, ground services, revenue management, alliances, e-commerce, business innovation and treasury. In his most recent position, Bas was Senior Vice President Corporate Controller.

Bas Brouns holds a master’s in Business Administration from the University of Groningen and a master’s in Finance from London Business School.

Biography Maarten Stienen

Maarten Stienen (1974) joined KLM as a management trainee in 1998. Having completed his traineeship, he joined Aircraft Services, where he worked for four years and was ultimately appointed head of Operations. Seeking a new challenge, he trans­ferred to Outstations in 2004, becoming general manager for North, Central and South America, which saw him moving to New York.

In 2007, he returned to the Netherlands to take the post of vice president of Baggage & Turnaround Services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Having held this post for four years, he was appointed vice president of Industrial Relations & Compensation and Benefits, where he took charge of restructuring employment compensation and benefits for the entire KLM workforce.

In 2018, he was appointed managing director of KLM Catering Services, where he was in charge of service delivery to multiple airlines, the redesign of the catering supply chain and the realignment of commercial and personnel strategy. He was then appointed senior vice president of Hub Operations, a division tasked with all aircraft and passenger handling for KLM and partners at Schiphol. Maarten worked at this division during the coronavirus pandemic: one of the most challenging crises in KLM’s history. In August 2022, he was appointed chief operations officer.

Maarten Stienen has gained 25 years of operational and management experience at various AFKL Group divisions and in executive posts. Thanks to this broad experience, he has extensive insight into garnering workforce support for essential changes. Maarten also has a great affinity for key topics such as customer satisfaction, digitisation and sustainability.

Biography Miriam Kartman

Miriam Kartman (1965), Chief People Officer (CPO) within the Board of Directors, is responsible for KLM's human resource policy, including people transformation, resourcing & health, strategic personnel planning, learning & development, diversity & inclusion, and collective labour agreements. In this role, she heads, amongst others, Industrial Relations Compensations and Benefits, HR Strategy & Portfolio and People Transformation departments.

Miriam started her career as Employee Relations Advisor at ExxonMobil. In 1992, she joined KLM as HR Manager of Cargo. She subsequently held various positions within the HR domain and as a line manager, including Senior Vice President Operations Control. Miriam has extensive experience in the aviation sector. She is skilled in HR advice, coaching, trade union relations, and the operational and commercial aspects of aviation and customer experiences. Miriam has joined the KLM board of directors, effective March 2023.

Miriam is a member of the Board of the Airline People Directors' Council (APDC), an international organisation of HR professionals within Airlines and a member of the policy committee of the General Employers' Association of the Netherlands (AWVN), the largest employers' association in the Netherlands. Miriam is a member of the Supervisory Board of GITP, Marfo and Wings of Support.

Miriam graduated in Business Economics and Social Economic Law from Utrecht University and took various courses at the IMD Business School.

Biography Barry ter Voert

Barry A.M. ter Voert (1971) holds an MSc in Business Administration and graduated in Economics from Tilburg University. After a traineeship with Arthur Andersen in London, he joined KLM in 1996 as a management trainee. He has worked in Amsterdam, Budapest and Paris and held a variety of positions in the Air France-KLM commercial organisation, including Senior Vice President Pricing & Revenue Management and Senior Vice President Europe. In March 2023, Barry joined the KLM Board of Managing Directors as Chief Experience Officer (CXO) & EVP Business Development. In this role, he is responsible for the KLM brand, customer experience and the development of KLM's business model, heading the departments of Mainport Strategy, Fleet Development, Network Planning, Alliances, Customer Experience and Information Services. Barry believes in a future in which KLM will lead the way in making the airline industry even more sustainable.

As CXO, Barry ter Voert is a member of the Executive Board of SkyTeam, an alliance of airlines that include Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines.
